Materials You’ll Need:
- Fencing Material: Choose from options like wood, vinyl, aluminum, or composite fencing based on your preferences and budget. Our top choice is cedar fencing panels, or boards if you prefer. Cedar is naturally rot resistant and builds a high quality fence. Just be sure to stain it or it will gray within the year if you get a lot of rain. We were pleased with the quality and affordability of the cedar panels at Home Depot.
- Posts and Rails: Select sturdy posts and rails to provide structural support for your fence. For posts, we prefer pressure treated cedar 4 x 4 fence posts from your local hardware store.
- Hardware: Gather nails, screws, brackets, and other hardware necessary for assembling the fence components. We prefer deck screws as they are extremely secure, rust resistant and you won’t need a nail gun. We use these Deck Screws.
- Tools: Ensure you have essential tools such as a saw, drill, level, measuring tape, and post hole digger for the construction process. A digging bar or auger will make your life much easier while digging multiple 2 ft. holes.
- Stain: We prefer Ready Seal Fence Stain because it truly is “goof proof” as advertised. It’s extremely easy to use and turns out great without being an expert painter. We like the “light oak” color but it comes in various options. You can build a fence in the winter (we’ve done it!) just make sure you stain that summer when the wood is dry.

Ensure proper spacing and alignment. Set the posts in concrete for stability. Quikrete is the easiest option as you can pour it directly into the holes with water without needing to premix it. If you are using premade fence panels, we recommend alternating installation of post and panel so that there’s less room for error in spacing.
- Attach Rails and Panels: Secure horizontal rails to the posts, then attach the fencing panels or pickets using appropriate fasteners like deck screws.
- Add Gates and Hardware: Install gates at designated entry points, ensuring they swing freely and securely latch closed. Attach hinges, latches, and handles as needed.
- Finish and Maintain: Apply a protective finish or paint to the fence to enhance durability and aesthetics. Regularly inspect and maintain the fence to address any repairs or maintenance needs.
